Using GlobalSight
Workflow
I want to modify the source text of an asset after translation has begun. How do I do this?
Currently, it isn't possible to do this automatically. Here is a workaround, courtesy of Etienne Kroger:
For now, the best approach is essentially as follows: - Check the TM Profile (watch for unlocalized segment settings); - Alert users and push the "old" project through completion (even with unlocalized segments); and - Create a new project and take advantage of in-context matches to quickly rebuild the translations in the new source files. Important note regarding the Dynamic Leverage Options in the TM Profile: In-progress translation are not considered "final". GS will not consider them available for leverage during the import. They will only be available when translators open segments in the editors. This is why it is important to push the current project through completion, so that the translations can be written to TM. Once the translations are in TM, they will be leveraged during import and translation teams will essentially have a largely translated project.
Once a workflow is underway, is it possible to go backwards?
No, you would need to cancel the job and restart it.
Can a PM reassign activities to different users?
Yes, a PM can reassign activities to different users, regardless of whether they have been accepted or not. Assigning an activity counts as accepting it on the assignee's behalf.
Rates and Word Counts
What do the word counts mean?
When a file is imported into GlobalSight, its content is extracted from the source document and split into segments. Each segment is leveraged (matched) against the TM to find possible match candidates. The source words are counted and assigned a percentile score that reflects match quality. For example, a very good match might be a 90% match, while a poor one would be a 30% match. These scores are then used to divide the words up into different categories to generate a scoping report.
Each category (for example, "matches between 95%-99%") can have a different cost associated with it. This is configured using Rates. Rates can be attached to different activities (such as translation or review) and can be applied to the word count information to generate a total cost.
Translation Memory
I translated a file, but I don't see my translations in the TM. What's wrong?
While you are in the process of translating a document, your translations are saved to a "page" TM that is specific to the current document. This allows you to reuse that work later in the document. However, the translations are not immediately saved to the "storage" TM that is available in other documents. In order to save your translations to the storage TM, you need to export the document. See #Exporting Translated Documents.

Exporting Translated Documents
I've translated a document in GlobalSight. How do I get the translated file?
This is a two-step process in GlobalSight:
- Export the document, which generates the translated file on the server and saves its translations to the TM.
- Download the document to your local computer.
Exporting Files
To export the file, follow these steps:
- In the My Activities screen, click on the activity that corresponds to the document you wish to export.
- Click Export to bring up the Export dialog.
- Click Export again. The default Export Location values are generally good enough.
You can also export files directly from the My Jobs page. This allows you to export multiple files simultaneously.
- In the My Jobs screen, click on the job whose files you with to export.
- Scroll to the Workflow list at the bottom of the screen.
- Select the workflow(s) you wish to export files from and click Export.
- As before, click Export in the Export dialog to generate the translated files.
Downloading Files
When you are ready to download the file, follow these steps:
- In the My Activities screen, click on the activity that corresponds to the document you with to download.
- Click Download Files.
- You will be prompted for a location on your computer to save to.
You can also download files directly from the My Jobs page. This allows you to download multiple files simultaneously.
- In the My Jobs screen, click on the job whose files you with to download.
- Scroll to the Workflow list at the bottom of the screen.
- Select the workflow(s) you wish to download files from and click Download.
- You will be presented with a file tree. Select the files to download by clicking their checkboxes and then clicking the >> button. (Tip: you do not need to expand the folder tree on the left side. If you check the top-level folder, all the available files beneath it will be selected.).
- When you have selected the files to download, click Download.
Offline Translation
How do I export files for offline translation?
- In the My Activities page, click on the translation activity you wish to work on offline.
- Accept the activity if you haven't already.
- Click on the Work Offline tab. The Download sub-tab will appear.
- Choose the appropriate format for your offline translation tool and set any other options.
- Click Start Download
What formats are support for offline translation?
- XLIFF 1.2
- Trados Bilingual RTF
- Paragraph View RTF
- List View RTF
- Plain Text
How do I import files after I translated them online?
- In the My Activities page, click on the translation activity you have been working on offline.
- Click on the Work Offline tab.
- Click on the Upload sub-tab and follow the instructions.
Common Problems
Installation
When I run the Install.bat file on Windows, it crashes with a NullPointerException.
This happens because of a change in one of the Java libraries in JRE 1.6.0_12. The workarounds are to run the installer using Java 1.6.0_11 or earlier, or to run the installer with Install.bat -noUI. This problem is fixed in GlobalSight 7.1.7.1.
The Windows Installer encounters errors when the database is being created
There have been reports of the database setup failing if the GlobalSight installer is run from within a directory path containing a space or a non-ascii character. (For example, running the installer from c:\Program Files (x86)\GlobalSight\install could cause this problem.) The symptom of this problem is a set of errors like this:
Processing data\mysql\create_quartz_tables_mysql.sql... ERROR 1102 (42000): Incorrect database name '<c:\program files (x86)\globalsight\install\data\mysql\create_quartz_tables_mysql.sql'
If you see this error, try moving your GlobalSight directory to c:\ or some other directory path that does not contain spaces. Also, report it on the forums, since this problem doesn't seem to happen all the time. It may only affect certain versions of Windows.
The URL that goes out in notification emails is wrong. How do I fix it?
You will need to adjust the cap.login.url parameter in the database. See Running GlobalSight Behind an Apache Reverse Proxy#Configuring_GlobalSight.
The installer console reported errors while creating the database. What happened?
The GlobalSight installer needs the default storage engine for MySQL to be set to InnoDB. If it's not, a bunch of CREATE TABLE statements will fail due to tables trying to create foreign key constraints between different table types.
The easiest way to fix this is to add the following line to your my.ini or my.cnf file and then restart MySQL:
default-storage-engine=INNODB
If that's not an option, you can edit the .sql files in install/data/mysql and add this line at the top of each:
SET storage_engine=INNODB
General
Sometimes I just can't connect at all.
If your browser sometimes tells the site is down, it's possible you are sending HTTP headers too long for Tomcat. In that case, Tomcat refuses the request without even sending an error page. Fortunately, there is an easy fix. Open up jboss/jboss_server/server/default/deploy/jbossweb-tomcat50.sar/server.xml in your GlobalSight install. You need to set the maxHttpHeaderSize attribute in the first <Connector> element to a higher value, eg 8192. For example:

Only add the maxHttpHeaderSize attribute; do not change other values! Then, restart GlobalSight.
Note: If you run the installer again, it will overwrite this file and you will have to make the change again.
This problem will be fixed in the next GlobalSight release.
Offline Translation
I downloaded a kit for offline translation, translated a few segments, but now the upload fails with an error. What's wrong?
The upload will fail if GlobalSight can't validate your translations for some reason. There are a few reasons that this could happen (file corruption, etc), but by far the most common cause of this problem has to do with fuzzy matching. The GlobalSight TM can suggest fuzzy translation matches that contain placeholders that do not correspond to placeholders in the source segment. These translations will fail validation in GlobalSight, and the upload will fail. (Unfortunately, there's nothing in the UI to help you narrow down the problem.)
If you have a translation kit that is failing to upload, open the kit in your offline editor and look for segments where fuzzy matches were used. Check to see if these translations have placeholders like [x1] or [x2] that do not exist in the source segment. If you find any such placeholders, delete them. Then save your changes and try the upload again.
Termbase
I uploaded a termbase into GlobalSight, and can see the terms when I search, but leveraging against the termbase produces no matches?
This is a known issue. After uploading terms into GlobalSight, the term information will not appear in matching results until you reindex the termbase. To do this:
- Open Setup > Terminology
- Select your Termbase and click "Indexes"
- In the Indexes screen, click "Check All" to select everything
- Click "Save". After saving, the "Re-Index" button should become enabled.
- Click "Re-Index".
- Close the termbase.

Is there a version of Desktop Icon for Linux?

What do I fill in for the "Host Name" and "Host Port" fields when I start Desktop Icon?
Desktop Icon needs to be pointed at the instance of GlobalSight you wish to use. If you are using GlobalSightSaaS, use these values:
- Host Name: globalsightsaas.com
- Host Port: 80
For other installations, you will need to use the host name of the machine hosting GlobalSight. GlobalSight runs on port 80 by default, but talk to your administrator if you are having trouble connecting to it.
